Women Cyber Safety Hackathon
The Hackathon aims to raise awareness against the issues of violence and harassment our women face online. Women’s Safety Hackathon invites women and allies to find technical solutions to the problem of cyber crimes against women & make online spaces safe for them. The event brought together some of the brightest minds in the tech industry and provided an opportunity for participants to collaborate and share their ideas on how to create a safer online environment for women. The atmosphere was electric, with participants working hard to develop innovative solutions that addressed the challenges faced by women in the digital world.
More than 230 applicants have submitted their application for women cyber safety hackathon
After an extensive screening phase, only 60 best applications were accepted and invited.
We formed 15 teams from the participants to brainstorm ideas for the hackathon.
The women’s cyber safety hackathon consisted of two parts, each designed to address the online safety concerns faced by women. In the first part, the participants were trained on the various online issues such as cyber blackmailing, harassment, trolling, hacking attempts, defamation, oversharing, and impersonation. The training was comprehensive and aimed at educating the participants on the dangers of these issues and how to avoid falling victim to them. The trainers used real-life examples and interactive activities to help the participants understand the importance of online safety and how to protect themselves
The second part of the hackathon was a team-based brainstorming session where participants were given time to come up with solutions to the online safety issues discussed in the training. Teams were formed based on the participants’ areas of interest and expertise, and they were encouraged to collaborate and share their ideas. To provide additional support, we invited judges and mentors from academia and industry to participate in the hackathon. These experts provided guidance and support to the participants, helping them to develop more innovative and effective solutions.
After the brainstorming session, each team was given 5 minutes to present their solution in front of the judges. The presentations were evaluated based on the potential impact, feasibility, and originality of the solutions. The judges were impressed by the high quality of the presentations and the innovative solutions presented by the teams. All of the solutions were great, and it was clear that the participants had put in a lot of effort and creativity into developing them.
The Top 3 winners of the hackathon were awarded with prize money to recognise their efforts and to encourage them to continue working on their solutions. The award ceremony was a moment of celebration and recognition for the participants, who had worked hard to develop innovative solutions to online safety issues. The prize money not only recognized their hard work but also provided them with the resources they need to further develop their solutions and bring them to market.
The Women Cyber Safety Hackathon is privileged to have an exceptional panel of experts who will serve as both jury members and mentors throughout the event. This esteemed group comprises a range of professionals who bring diverse expertise and experiences to the table. Zunera Jalil, a lecturer from Air University, Faisal Imtiaz, a Security Expert from NITB, Afifa Fatima, a SOC Analyst at Jazz, and Saba Kulsoom, the Director of Ecosystem at Fasset, have all graciously offered their guidance and support. These experts mentored participants during the brainstorming session, providing valuable insights and helping shape their ideas. Furthermore, they played a vital role in judging the participants’ ideas at the end of the hackathon, ensuring the success of the event. Their presence added immense value to the Women Cyber Safety Hackathon, empowering participants to develop innovative solutions and fostering a safer digital environment for all.
The hackathon was a great success, as the participants left with a deeper understanding of online safety issues and the confidence to implement the solutions they had developed. The hackathon created a platform for women to come together and collaborate on solutions to the problems they face in the online world. With the help and support of the judges and mentors from academia and industry, the participants were able to develop solutions that were both impactful and practical.
